Founding a Legacy
Won-Door Corporation is dedicated to crafting the most cutting-edge products in the building construction sector. With a legacy spanning over five decades, Won-Door remains a family-owned business, rooted in enduring family values.
In 1962, Jay and Ruth Smart embarked on a journey that would revolutionize the construction industry. The couple founded the Won-Door Corporation in Salt Lake City, Utah, driven by Jay's extensive experience in selling building specialty products. Inspired by the success of his insulated storm windows, Jay set out to create a two-track folding partition. The exceptional design prompted a customer to suggest the name "Won-Door" – a testament to the door's wonderous qualities.
Innovating Fire Safety
Entering the late 1960s, Jay became captivated by the idea of engineering a horizontal sliding fire door assembly. The goal was to allow large openings in fire-resistant construction while addressing the unique evacuation needs of individuals with disabilities. The culmination of more than a decade of fire testing and research came in 1977 when the Won-Door FireGuard passed two fire tests at Underwriter’s Laboratory. This innovative door gained widespread support from disabled advocacy groups, establishing its role in creating safe staging areas for the disabled in multistoried buildings.
A Legacy Continues
Facing a health challenge in 1979, Jay's son, Ron Smart, assumed leadership of the company. Leveraging his business acumen, Ron continued to enhance Won-Door's products and invested heavily in product testing. In 1988, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code adopted provisions for horizontal sliding fire doors, and by 2000, significant code changes expanded the use of compliant systems, making them universally accepted in various applications.
Ron's vision included a robust U.S. distribution system, marked by company-owned branches across the nation. Sales soared, and Ron's son, Scott, joined the team, contributing to the development of the FireGuard CS (Compressed-Stack) fire doors. Ron and Scott's commitment extended beyond products to the people of Won-Door, with an average employee tenure of approximately 17 years.
