According to the Door and Access Systems Manufacturing Association (DASMA), high-performance doors must include the following characteristics:

1. Rolling, folding or sliding
2. Non-residential
3. Powered operation
4. Opening speed of minimum 20 inches per second and/or cycles of minimum 100 per day.
5. Meeting two out of the following three:

a. Made-to-order for exact size and custom features.
b. Designed to be able to withstand equipment impact (breakaway during hits)
c. Designed to sustain heavy usage with minimal maintenance.

In other words, the main difference between a regular rolling overhead door and a high-performance door is that the high-performance door offers a higher operating speed (high-speed doors), they are able to sustain a higher number of opening and closing cycles, and require lower maintenance and repair cost.
