The main purpose of a vehicle restraint safety system is to prevent unscheduled truck departures at the loading dock.  These are designed to lock a truck/trailer in the proper position at the loading dock during loading or unloading, these also provide visual safety in communication between the truck driver and the attendant of the loading dock.

The vehicle restraints incorporate an integrated system of signal lights, inside the vehicle restraint control panel and outside on the facility wall to communicate loading and restraint status to the dock attendant as well as the truck driver. Vehicle restraints and dock lock safety systems are key components of efficient and safe modern loading docks.

Unscheduled Truck Departure at the Loading Dock

Unscheduled truck departure during the loading or unloading process does happen and it could result in a devastating accident. This is why installing a vehicle restraint is so important.

How to Prevent Unscheduled Truck Departure at the Loading Dock?

Installing a vehicle restraint (also known as truck restraint) will prevent unscheduled truck departures. The vehicle restraint locking mechanism engages with the truck’s rear impact guard safely locking the truck in position. With a truck parked in position, the loading dock attendant activates the vehicle restrain using an interior installed control panel.

Wall-Mounted Traffic Light in Loading Docks

There is an exterior wall-mounted traffic light that advises the truck driver to back into position (green light) stay in position during (red signal), or leave the loading dock area (green signal).

The wall-mounted traffic lights can have red and green lights.

Dock Lights - Traffic Lights and LED Traffic Lights
- The green light illuminates when the restraint is engaged to the truck’s rear impact guard, signaling it is now safe to load the truck.

- The red light illuminates when the vehicle restraint is not in use.

If the truck restraint is activated and does not engage with the rear impact guard a warning buzzer sounds.

On a green signal only, exterior visual communication is achieved with an outside wall-mounted traffic style signal light and a high visibility sign advising the truck driver to back into position or leave.

Under the dock leveler away from the elements the ultimate vehicle restraint safety system stores preventing any accidental contact.
